Description

The B-17 Flying Fortress is the most famous American bomber of the Second World War. Heavy casualties in 1943, when a total of 120 bombers were shot down, led to the conclusion that previous B-17 versions did not have sufficient defensive weapons. As a result, the front lower nose of the B-17G was equipped with a turret that carried two 12.7 mm machine guns to ensure effective defense against the feared frontal attacks. At the same time, additional gun positions were added to the fuselage sides. The crew, which was now able to defend itself in all directions, led to a feeling of security, which was also reflected in its nickname Flying Fortress. Although primarily used in Europe and the Middle East, it also provided invaluable services in the Pacific region while flying sea patrol, reconnaissance and bombing attacks. A total of 12,731 Flying Fortress were built, of which 8,680 machines were G versions. The last B-17G left the plant on July 29, 1945. This B-17G-35-VE 42-97880 Little Miss Mischief was delivered on March 23, 1944 and served from June 15, 1944 to April 4, 1945 at 91 Bomb group. 324th bomb squadron flown to Bassingbourn, England and 75 mission missions.
